this book edges dangerously close to the decorative and commercial face of art. With this said, there is merit in this publication for elementary classroom and art teachers in need of ideas for gifts and other products that involve art processes and a modicum of creativity. The author has a master's degree in art education from Stanford University and experience in public school art teaching. She also knows how to cram a book full of enticing color photos of more art projects based on rubber stamp designs than could easily be imagined. Her ideas extend well beyond repetitive designs with commercial rubber stamps as she presents ideas that involve brayers, sponges and textile/collage prints, printed on such varied surfaces as decorative papers, fabrics, glass, walls, and found objects. This technique-oriented book also presents many activities that result in objects such as frames, place mats, wallpaper, calendars, lamp shades, and similar household objects. A variety of greeting card folds--pop-up, explosion, and various multi-fold cards--are also illustrated and explained. With the caveat noted above concerning the cute and commercial, this is a colorfully illustrated and lively art activity resource for the discerning teacher.
